Page locks and approved customers
Lock pages or collections so only verified, or only chosen, customers can see them.
Page locks, required customer tags and approved customers are free on every plan.
Two kinds of lock
| Basic lock | Restricted lock | |
|---|---|---|
| When | You lock pages but add no rules. | You add a required tag or an approved customer. |
| Who gets in | Anyone who signs in, or verifies with a one-time SMS code. | Only signed-in customers who match your rules. |
| What visitors see | "This page is private. Please verify to continue." with a phone form. | "This page is private" and a Return to store button, so they can sign in. |
| What you need | At least one SMS country. | At least one rule. No SMS country needed. |
Visitors can't close either screen. Rules apply to every locked page.
Lock a page or collection
- Go to Settings > Access control.
- In the Page & collection locks card, turn on Enable page locks.
- In Page or collection path, paste the page's address. You can paste the full URL or just the path, for example
/pages/wholesaleor/collections/vip. - Click Add lock. The page appears under Locked pages.
- Click Save in the bar at the top of the page. Locks don't go live until you save.
You can lock up to 100 pages. Only addresses that start with /pages/ or /collections/ can be locked.
Locking a collection also locks product pages opened from inside it (for example /collections/vip/products/...). A product's own address (/products/...) is not covered. To protect a product page itself, use Product protection on the Verification gates tab.
To unlock a page, click Remove next to it, then click Save.
The page-lock switch is greyed out
Enable page locks only works when visitors have a way in. You need either:
- at least one SMS country (in Login methods), or
- at least one required tag or approved customer.
The banner on the card explains which is missing. Click Go to Login methods to add countries.
Let only certain customers in
Use the Who can access locked pages section. A customer needs to match only one rule: a tag or the approved list.
Required customer tags
- Under Required customer tags, type a Shopify customer tag in Add a tag, for example
wholesaleorvip. - Click Add tag.
- Click Save.
Signed-in customers with at least one of these tags can view locked pages. You can add up to 50 tags, each up to 60 characters. Tags are checked on our servers and are never shown to visitors.
Approved customers
- Under Approved customers, type an email address or phone number in Email or phone.
- Click Approve. You'll see "Customer approved". This saves right away.
You can approve up to 500 customers. Approved customers must sign in. The list is checked on our servers and is never shown to visitors.
To remove someone, click Remove next to them.
What a visitor sees on a restricted lock
- Not signed in: "Log in with an authorized account to view it." and a Return to store button. From the store they sign in, then come back.
- Signed in but not allowed: "Your account doesn't have access to this page." and a Log out to switch account link.
Common problems
"New visitors can't get into your locked pages." Your locks are on, but there's no SMS country and no rule. Add a country in Login methods, add a tag or approved customer, or turn page locks off and click Save.
"Publishing your access rules to the storefront failed." Your rules saved, but may not be live yet. Click Retry publish.
"Enter a page or collection path like /pages/wholesale or /collections/vip". The address isn't a page or collection. Copy it again from your store.
A customer with the right tag can't get in. They must be signed in. Check that their customer profile in Shopify has the tag you added.
