New vs. classic customer accounts
OTP+ works with both kinds of Shopify customer accounts, but a few settings differ.
Which one do I have?
Shopify offers two kinds of customer accounts:
- New customer accounts — Shopify hosts the sign-in page.
- Classic customer accounts (OTP+ setup calls these Legacy customer accounts) — your theme shows the login page.
OTP+ detects your type on its own. You'll see it on the setup page: New customer accounts or Legacy customer accounts. If OTP+ can't tell, click Account settings to check in Shopify.
To change your account type, go to your Shopify admin settings for customer accounts. After a change, open OTP+ Settings again to check your login options.

Settings for new customer accounts
- Go to Settings > Login methods.
- In the Storefront login card, turn on Enable login modal.
- Click Save.
If you picked at least one login method during setup, OTP+ turned this on for you.
While Enable login modal is off:
- the Login methods and After sign-in cards are hidden,
- the Customizations tab shows Enable the login modal first.
With the modal on, customers sign in with Google, Apple or an SMS code in the pop-up. For email sign-in, OTP+ hands the customer to Shopify's own sign-in.
Settings for classic customer accounts
OTP+ shows its widget on your store's login page as soon as the app embed is on and a login method is set.
To also greet visitors with a pop-up:
- Go to Settings > Login methods.
- In the Storefront login popup card, turn on Pop up login on landing.
- Click Save.
The pop-up opens once per browsing session for signed-out visitors. After signing in, the customer goes back to the page they were on. With the pop-up on, the account icon also opens it for signed-out visitors.
Things that work the same on both
- Verification gates, page locks and COD verification.
- SMS countries.
- The After sign-in options.
- Widget customization.
Common problems
I have new customer accounts and the login options are missing. Turn on Enable login modal in Settings > Login methods, then click Save.
Clicking the account icon goes to Shopify's page, not OTP+. On new customer accounts, check Enable login modal is on and the app embed is on. Customers who already signed in directly with Shopify go to Shopify's account page as usual.
OTP+ says "We couldn't determine your customer account type." You can still finish setup. Click Account settings to check your type in Shopify.
